As we’ve talked about on the blog numerous times in the past, we’re big fans of OSSIO and the technological advancements they’ve brought to the surgical world, so Dr. Silverman was very excited to be invited to further his medical education and learn about new devices that OSSIO has been developing.

Dr. Silverman was able to connect with a number of like-mind specialists who were also interested in learning more about the new OSSIO products during a summit on the beach. The group also learned during classroom instruction before being able to demo some of the new products for themselves!

The team at OSSIO put together a short video highlighting the latest educational summit, and if you check it out, we think you’ll notice a familiar face!

We just want to thank the team at OSSIO for giving us a chance to further our medical knowledge so that we can provide the highest level of care to our patients. The summit was enjoyable and educational, and certainly a change of pace from a traditional continuing education course! Dr. Silverman has been a big fan of OSSIO for a long time, and he was actually the first surgeon in Minnesota to perform an operation using OSSIOfiber technology!

If you regularly follow our blog, you’re aware that we’re a big proponent of OSSIO Ltd. and their OSSIOfiber technology. We’ve written about them in the past and why we think the technology could revolutionize orthopedic surgery going forward, and recently they reached out to see if we’d share some reasons why we choose OSSIOfiber for the right patient in our clinic.

There are three main reasons why we choose OSSIOfiber as a biointegrative bone regeneration device instead of traditional surgical hardware for the right patient. Check out the video or read the transcription below, and we sure to check out some of the other pieces we’ve written about OSSIOfiber, including how Dr. Silverman performed the first successful surgery in the state of Minnesota using the technology!

“I’ve been asked to explain why I chose OSSIO for my patient today. Well there are three reasons. The first – It integrates into bone. Bone grows through it, around it. The second – It get stronger as time goes on. It’s inclined to win the race, while screws can get weaker. Finally, I never have to take the hardware out. Those are the three reasons why I chose OSSIO today.

OSSIOfiber promotes healthy bone growth in the area with bioabsorbable technology that allows the structure to develop its own stability instead of relying on screws and other hardware that will be in a person’s foot for life. Hardware removal is a very difficult procedure that can oftentimes do more harm than good unless performed by an expert surgeon, so taking that out of the equation and allowing the patient to make a full recovery without permanent fixation devices is a gamechanger.

Disclosure – Dr. Silverman is an independent consultant for OSSIO, Inc.

Dr. Silverman is always keeping an eye on innovation and trying to incorporate new techniques and technologies in order to provide the best care for his patients. One company he’s been keeping his eye on is OSSIO Inc., which has been working to develop new surgical hardware that better incorporates into a person’s body so they aren’t left with plates or screws in their ankle or foot after a corrective procedure. Dr. Silverman has successfully incorporated the Ossiofiber during previous surgeries, and now he can cross another another surgical first off his list.

First OSSIO Ingrowth Fixation In The Twin Cities

Last week, Dr. Silverman became the first surgeon in the Twin Cities to perform a bunion correction procedure using Ossio ingrowth fixation. This is a procedure that uses specialized hardware that actually integrates with the patient’s natural bones so that there is no leftover hardware in the area once healing is complete.

This new biointegrative implant will be a gamechanger for patients because it can provide the same strength as traditional hardware without the potential complications caused by metal hardware that either remains in your body for life or requires a second surgery to be removed. Considering roughly 1 in 4 patients need to have “permanent” metal hardware removed in a second operation, you can see how much time and money this biointegrative product can save the patient by preventing removal operations. No more worrying about whether your metal implant will feel uncomfortable or cause localized inflammation, because with Ossio ingrowth fixation, the hardware disappears completely over time.

A unique aspect of the bio-inductive hardware is that it contains the same natural minerals that are found inside your own bones, allowing the product to slowly be absorbed into your bone after it has aided in stability, strength and healing. You can actually see how the product is incorporated into the bone in the three pictures on the right.

Not only does the biointegrative hardware fully integrate into the patient bone after some time, but it also provides benefits in the immediate aftermath of surgery. Patients benefit from earlier stability from a bone integrative product, as opposed to the gradual loss in stability that can develop with metal hardware fixation.

Moreover, the Ossio biointegrative hardware is actually stronger than natural bone and five times stronger than conventional polymer bioabsorbables. The bone, while still healing, is very strong because of the strength and stability provided by the ingrowth fixation.

As Dr. Silverman always says, there exists a race in orthopedic surgery for procedures like osteotomies, fractures and fusions, and that race is whether or not the bone will heal correctly before the metal hardware fails. This implant changes that race. We believe bioinductive hardware will become the standard for certain operations like bunion correction and hammertoes, and we’re pleased to be able to offer this to our patients who are looking for a solution to their toe pain.

For more information about Ossio ingrowth hardware, or to talk to a foot specialist about your foot or toe pain, reach out to Dr. Silverman’s office today.

If you’re a frequent reader of this blog, you’re probably somewhat familiar with OSSIO, Inc. and their bone regeneration technology. We’ve profiled the company a few times in the past, including in January when Dr. Silverman performed the first surgery in Minnesota using OSSIOfiber technology. The fiber is twice as strong as traditional non-fixation devices, and the fiber eventually naturally incorporates with a person’s bone, meaning there’s no need for a hardware removal operation.

OSSIO is in the news again, this time for earning 510(k) market clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for their OSSIOfiber Compression Screw Portfolio. The screws can be used to treat a number of injuries, including the alignment and fixation of:

Bone fractures

Comminuted fractures

Fragmentation

Osteotomies

Arthrodesis

Bone grafts

New OSSIOfiber Integrative Screw

The bio-integrative implant is the only compression screw on the market that is both strong enough to provide for stable bone fixation and designed such that it eventually integrates with the bone without adverse foreign body reactions or stress shielding. By integrating into the bone, the patient doesn’t have to worry about long-term hardware discomfort or related complications. Previous studies have shown that the screws can provide for easy insertion and secure fixation with rapid bone attachment in as little as two weeks following surgery, and they lead to gradual bone incorporation within as little as 18-24 months.

To this date, more than 1,000 OSSIOfiber implantations have been successfully performed in the US, and that number will only continue to climb, especially in the wake of the market clearance for their screws. The company plans to commercially launch the screws in early 2021 and add more lengths and diameters to their portfolio in the near future.

I personally cannot wait to provide my patients with this option for their surgeries if they are an ideal candidate. It will make such a difference in their care, and I expect roughly 25 percent of patients will now be able to undergo a fixation procedure with hardware insertion without needing to undergo a subsequent hardware removal operation in the future. Hardware removal can be a very tricky procedure, so eliminating the need for the removal could be a gamechanger for both patients and surgeons. I’m excited to implement this product in the near future.

Dr. Silverman made headlines recently when it was announced that he was the first surgeon in the state of Minnesota to use Ossiofiber technology in a successful surgery!

For those of you unfamiliar with Ossiofiber, we profiled it back in June when their parent company was honored with the 2019 Frost & Sullivan North American New Product Innovation Award for their development of Ossiofiber Intelligent Bone Regeneration Technology. The product claims to be the first fully bio-integrative fixation device that is leaps and bounds ahead of traditional fixation hardware.

For starters, the fiber’s design is twice as strong as traditional non-metal fixation devices, helping to provide strength and stability to the area. But the real innovation lies in the fact that the fiber naturally incorporates into a person’s bone in as few as 18 months, meaning there is no need to undergo a second surgery to remove the hardware once the bone has healed.

First Case In Minnesota

Dr. Silverman recently used the technology during a surgery, and so far everything is going exactly as planned. In fact, he was told by the parent company that he was the first surgeon in Minnesota to use Ossiofiber technology during a corrective surgical procedure. Congrats to Dr. Silverman and his team for this honor!

In an effort to be fully transparent, we want to let you know that Dr. Silverman is an independent consultant for Ossio INC., but the main reason he was drawn to them in the first place is because he truly believes in the technology and its ability to provide patients with improved healing and a reduced need for a secondary surgery to remove the hardware. For the right patient, he believes it can be a game changer.

Their innovation is a bone regeneration technology that could shape how future foot and ankle surgeries are performed.

They developed what they claim to be the first fully bio-integrative fixation device that goes above and beyond traditional fixation hardware. The technology uses a fiber architecture that is twice as strong as traditional non-metal fixation devices, but here’s the real kicker. The fiber naturally incorporates into the bone in as little as 18 months, meaning there is no need for a secondary surgery to remove the hardware after the bone has healed.

“OSSIO’s bone regeneration fixation platform is a one-of-a-kind solution that integrates technology and innovation to improve patient quality of life,” said Sowmya Rajagopalan, Global Program Director at Frost & Sullivan. “OSSIOfiberTM is the first fully bio-integrative fixation device that does not compromise quality, as it uses a fiber architecture that is initially twice as strong as traditional non-metal materials typically used within fixation devices and it incorporates naturally into the bone over time, eliminating the need for hardware removal surgery. OSSIO is at the sweet spot of innovative orthopedic design and its unique implant material offers a myriad of opportunities for the global fixation market.”

Surgical Gamechanger

The technology has received 510(k) market clearance from the United States Food and Drug Administration and they began launching the product for foot and ankle fixations just last month. They expect to have a full launch throughout the US by the third quarter of this year.

Researchers believe that the fiber technology can help address foot and ankle fractures, and they hope to expand to other types of fractures that occur during sporting activities, car accidents and high energy traumas. They also want to grow into the reconstruction, pediatrics and spinal segmentation markets in the next few years.

This is such a unique product, as this is the first material that integrates into bone and is completely remodeled after 18 months. I’m very excited to see where this corporation takes the product in the future. They are finally making hardware removal surgery a thing of the past, which will only serve to help patients.
