About Top Doctors 2025

One of the best things about the Top Doctors distinction from Castle Connolly is that it is a peer-nominated award. While we love it when our patients leave 5-star reviews and talk about their positive experience with Dr. Silverman, it’s also nice to be recognized by our peers. These are some of the people we collaborate with on a daily basis or who we connect with at seminars and continuing education programs. It’s wonderful that they have seen our passion firsthand and felt compelled to nominate Dr. Silverman for this award.

Once a physician has been nominated, the team at Castle Connolly sifts through all the submissions to see who meets the standards of the Top Doctor. There are over 1,000,000 practicing physicians in the US, and only 7% meet the standard for a Castle Connolly Top Doctor. Here’s some more information about the selection process from Castle Connolly:

“The first step to becoming a Castle Connolly Top Doctor is through our nomination process. Every year, Castle Connolly surveys tens of thousands of practicing physicians across the US by email and mail to ensure our list always reflects the latest in quality care. After a doctor is nominated, our physician-led research team begins their work to screen each doctor and confirm whether he or she meets Castle Connolly standards.

Castle Connolly evaluates several criteria when selecting Top Doctors, including professional qualifications, education, hospital and faculty appointments, research leadership, professional reputation and disciplinary history. Where available, we include outcomes data in our research. We also ask doctors in our survey to consider not only the training and clinical skills of the physicians they nominate, but also interpersonal skills such as listening and communicating effectively, demonstrating empathy, and instilling trust and confidence.”

As we said in last year’s blog when Dr. Silverman was named to the list, we had no intention of giving up our spot in 2024, and we followed through with another great year of patient care! We don’t do this job for the recognition, but every once in a while it is rewarding to see that others view the work Dr. Silverman does in such a positive light. Thank you to our patients, colleagues and the team at Minnesota Monthly for this honor, and you can bet we’ll do everything we can to pen a similar blog in 2025!

How Doctors Make The Top Doctors List

Here’s how the Top Doctors list is whittled down to a final list:

Who picks the doctors? 
Their peers. Professional Research Services contacts thousands of licensed doctors in the 11-county metro area, as well as Olmsted County, based on a list provided by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. Respondents are asked to log on to a secure website and name up to three doctors (other than themselves) in each specialty category. Physicians who received the highest number of votes are reflected by specialty in the Top Doctors list.

How were the specialties selected? 
The American Board of Medical Specialties recognizes 24 member boards that grant certification in specialized areas of medical practices. Some of those member boards grant certification in specialties as well. Our staff used those specialties and sub-specialties as a starting point for creating physician categories, though board certification was not a requirement for being named.

Does advertising affect the poll? 
No. Doctors are not added to or removed from the list based on their or their employers’ advertising history with the magazine.

Every year Minnesota Monthly publishes a list of the best physicians throughout the state of Minnesota, and after earning a spot on the list last year, we’re pleased to find out that Dr. Silverman was recognized on the Top Doctors 2022 list!

As we talked about a bit on the blog last year when discussing the honor, it’s no easy task to make it onto the Top Doctors list. Here’s how the process works:

“Professional Research Services contacts thousands of licensed doctors in the 11-county metro area, as well as Olmsted County, based on a list provided by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. Physicians Choosing Physicians

As you can see, it’s not about who brings in the most money for the hospital or spends the most with Minnesota Monthly that determines who makes the Top Doctors list. Physicians are the ones who nominate their peers for the honor. Oftentimes they are guided by the question “If you needed medical treatment in one of these fields, who would you turn to for care?”

We’re so honored that so many physicians felt that we were worthy of this recognition, and we’re happy to see a number of familiar faces on this list! We’re also pleased to see that a couple of the physicians that we nominated also earned Top Doctors status, as it’s not a feat that’s easily achieved! As we said last year, now that we’re on the list, we have no intention of ever missing out in the future, so we’re going to continue to strive to provide the highest level of care to our patients each and every day!

Top Doctors 2021

Each year, Minnesota Monthly puts together a list of “Top Doctors” from across the state of Minnesota. However, it’s not just their opinion that decides who makes the list. The Top Doctors list is actually comprised of physicians who have been nominated by other physicians. Here’s a closer look at how the selection process works.

“In March, Professional Research Services contacted more than 10,000 licensed doctors in the 11-county metro county as well as Olmstead County, based on a list provided by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. Respondents were asked to log on to a secure website and name up to three doctors (other than themselves) in each specialty category. Physicians who received the highest number of votes are reflected by Specialty in the Top Doctors list. (Doctors are not added or removed from the list based on their employers’ advertising history with the magazine.)”

In other words, some of the brightest medical minds voted on who stood out in their community and across the state, and we’re so thankful that our colleagues believe in the vision we have for each of our patients. This past year has been extremely challenging on patients and providers, and we’re grateful that our colleagues feel that Dr. Silverman is doing everything he can for every patient that walks through his door.

Dr. Silverman is extremely pleased to be included on a list that features some of the best and most innovative medical minds in Minnesota, and together they challenge one another to be the best providers they can be. Words cannot express how thankful we are to the physicians who nominated us or to the patients who spoke so highly of us after receiving care.

We want to help each patient who is dealing with a health problem gain the knowledge and insights they need to best handle their situation. And while we hope that this may also bring some new patients into our office, the point of being active as an orthopedic surgeon on social media has always been to put the patient first.

Over the weekend, we were alerted that our efforts have earned us a distinguished honor among our peers, and we just wanted to share that award with our readers. A recent study in the World Journal of Orthopedics conducted research to determine who patients should be following if they are interested in learning more about certain health issues on social media. The study sought to determine the “Top 100 social media influencers in orthopedic surgery.” We were amazed to see that not only had Dr. Silverman made the list, but he was one of the more influential orthopedic surgeons on the web. According to the study, Dr. Lance Silverman is the 15th most influential doctor in orthopedic surgery.
