A new study found that roughly 21% of children will be obese in 2020 if current eating patterns continue.
Researchers studied the weight patterns of children ages 2-19 from the year 1971-2008. The results showed that the average BMI (body mass index) in children increased by 0.55 kg/m2 and body weight increased by 1.54 kg every decade. These numbers equal a 3.6% increase in child obesity every decade since 1971.
As we’ve previously discussed, a high BMI often leads to foot and ankle pain. Childhood obesity can mean a lifetime of foot and ankle problems.
To combat these rising levels of obesity, researchers suggest an increase in physical activity and a decrease in consumption of sugary drinks and high-fat processed food.
“Research shows that if you are fat as a child you will be fat as an adult,” says Dr. Lance Silverman. “Obesity causes diabetes and heart disease. Eating less and exercising more may work in children, but it doesn’t guarantee that children will develop healthy eating habits. Eating more vegetables and fewer grains leads to the most sustained appropriate weight levels.”
