As we continue to practice social distancing, it is clear that many people are putting a big focus on their overall health and wellness. Limiting contact with others can help you avoid the coronavirus, but limiting your physical activity can actually have negative outcomes for other areas of your body, including your feet. Below, we share some tips for safely caring for your feet during the era of social distancing.
Strengthening Your Feet While Social Distancing
It is important to remain active during the “stay at home” period, otherwise you may be at a heightened risk for injury when we jump back into some regular daily activities. So keep these tips in mind as you continue to social distance.
1. Actual Exercise – You might actually find that you are on your feet more often now that you are not stuck in your normal office setting, and while movement is great for your body throughout the day, you’ll also want to incorporate some actual exercise into your daily activities. Find time to go for a run outside, or set up your exercise equipment in the basement. We’ve noticed an uptick in runners and cyclists in the last week and a half, and it is great to see people still strengthening their feet.
2. Stretching – Stretching helps to facilitate blood flow to your feet and crucial structures in your lower body. If you’re stuck at home, your body might not be getting as much natural blood circulation, so take a couple minutes to stretch and flex your feet. Yoga or other stretching activities are also great options for helping keep your foot structures loose while you’re stuck at home.
3. Nail Care – Be sure to care for your toenails during this time as well. When trimming your toenails, strive to cut across the nail and avoid rounding the edges, as this can be a recipe for ingrown toenails. And just because you’re stuck inside doesn’t mean you can’t add a pop of color to your toenails with toenail polish. Painting nails with your kids can help provide a fun activity that helps keep our mental health in a good place while we work through this pandemic.
4. Clean Feet – Make sure you are also taking time out of your day to wash your feet. When you’re in the shower, take a minute to scrub your feet and keep them clean. When you’re drying off your feet, look for cuts, sores or rashes that make have developed on your feet. Early intervention is key for many foot conditions, and you’re more likely to spot an issue if you’re actively looking while you’re drying your feet. Keep them clean and perform regular foot checks.
